‘107 Mothers’

Berlin-based Films Boutique has sold Peter Kerekes’ Venice Horizons title 107 Mothers to a slew of European territories.

The film has sold to Switzerland (Trigon), Benelux (September Films), the Czech Republic (Artcam), Ukraine (Arthouse Traffic) and Slovakia (Filmtopia).

It tells the story of a woman given a seven-year prison sentence for a crime of passion, who has just given birth to her first child. She enters an Odessa correctional facility populated only by women.

107 Mothers had its world premiere on September 2 in Venice. It is the first fiction feature from Slovakian director Kerekes, who has previously made documentaries including 2003’s 66 Seasons and 2013 Karlovy Vary title Velvet Terrorists.

The cast is led by professional actor Maryna Klimova, with the rest of the actors sourced from inmates and staff of the prison.

The film will play in Toronto International Film Festival’s Industry Selects section, before heading to San Sebastian at the end of the month.
