EXCLUSIVE: Germany’s Weydemann Bros has boarded The House On The Moon, an upcoming sci-fi fantasy feature by Locarno winning director Nelson Yeo.
The firm will serve as co-producer, along with lead producers Momo Film from Singapore and Aview Images from Taiwan, following its previous international collaborations such as Cannes Critics Week grand prize winner Tiger Stripes and Un Certain Regard winner The Mysterious Gaze Of The Flamingo.
The film reinterprets the ancient legend of Chang Er and Hou Yi through a genre-defying lens set in a fractured world suspended between myth and futurism. Chang Er is a fairy maiden who embarks on a journey to the dark side of the moon to search for Hou Yi, her sun-shooting archer lover who vanishes on his quest to save the dying sun. A first look can be seen above.
The film was partially shot in virtual production with the support of a virtual production grant from Singapore’s IMDA. Taiwan Creative Content Agency (TAICCA) and Germany’s Film- und Medienstiftung NRW are among the major backers. It is in post-production after filming wrapped last month.
The cast is led by Lim Shi An from Toronto title Amoeba, Harry Chang from Taiwan box office hit Gatao: Like Father Like Son and Akira Huang from last year’s Berlinale Panorama title Silent Sparks. Acclaimed veteran actor Lee Kang-sheng co-stars.
Singapore-based director Yeo’s feature debut Dreaming & Dying won the Filmmakers of the Present and Swatch first feature awards at Locarno in 2023.
“This project is truly special, shaped by a distinctive directorial voice and vision,” said Weydemann Bros producer Jonas Weydemann. “It also highlights how vital strong Asian–European collaboration has become in today’s independent cinema.”
