May el-Toukhy’s Venice Golden Lion winner Woman Unknown and Paweł Pawlikowski’s Cannes best director winner Fatherland are among the awards season films heading to the feature film competition at the Evolution Mallorca International Film Festival (EMIFF), taking place from October 28-November 4 in Spain.
Further titles screening in competition include Danny Boyle’s Ink, a drama about the early days of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, Jesse Eisenberg’s comedy The Debut, Nora Jänicke’s marriage drama Isola and Damiano Michieletto’s Vivaldi music drama Primavera.
The six-strong debut selection includes Russell Goldman’s drama Sender, which premiered at SXSW; Tyler-Marie Evans’ dark teen drama Pretty Babies, which debuted at this year’s Edinburgh Film Festival; Elena’s Shift by Stefanos Tsivopoulos female-led drama starring Maria Dragus; and Sebastian Husak’s drama Bubbles.
Jordan Firstman’s feature debut Club Kid opens the festival October 28 while María Martínez Bayona’s The End Of It will close EMIFF on November 4.
Selected from over 1,500 submissions from 50 countries, the 15th edition of the festival will showcase international feature and debut competitions, documentary cinema, shorts and experimental work, alongside an industry programme.
Diane Kruger will receive the Evolution Icon award, joining previously announced honourees Edward Berger, the German director of films including All Quiet On The Western Front, Conclave and Ballad Of A Small Player, German actor Iris Berben and cinematographer Matthew Libatique, whose credits include Black Swan.
Mallorcan costume designer, production designer and visual artist Pau Aulí will receive the Evolution new talent award at the closing gala. Aulí’s credits include collaborations with Agustí Villaronga and Albert Serra, as well as the closing-night film The End Of It.
Running from October 31 to November 3, the EMIFF Producers Club will bring together international industry figures to discuss subjects including finding co-producers and international co-production as part of the industry strand.
Events also include the Evolution Pitch, a forum to give selected feature-film projects the opportunity to present to producers, directors, funders and other industry professionals. The winning project will receive a one-year subscription to the Swiss-based AI-solutions company Largo.ai.
