Steel Mill Pictures and Logie Pictures will start principal photography Monday on Jon S Baird’s adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Filth.
James McAvoy [pictured], Jamie Bell, Jim Broadbent, Eddie Marsan, Joanne Froggatt and Imogen Poots star.
The film will shoot primarily in Glasgow as well as on location in Sweden, Belgium and Germany.
McAvoy plays a corrupt policeman (and drug addict) who has to solve a brutal murder case with an ambitious colleague (Jamie Bell).
Writer/director Baird said: “Filth is filled with irreverent comedy and some extremely surreal moments, but ends with a sharp twist of poignancy. The character of Bruce Robertson has to show such a wide range that it could only take an actor as talented as James McAvoy to pull it off with the necessary charm and humanity.”
Producer Ken Marshall of Steel MIll added: “Bruce Robertson is not only a guilty pleasure, but a character edgier than all the other characters from Irvine Welsh’s works combined. With Filth we have the chance to make a bold and outrageous film that I have no doubt will be unique, darkly funny and ultimately commercial.”
Jens Meurer of Egoli Tossell Film is also producing. Executive producers are Zygi Kamasa (CEO of Lionsgate UK), Will Clarke (ex-founder and CEO of Optimum Releasing), and Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray of Maven Pictures (which is also financing). Other backers include Film House Germany, Film I Vast and Creative Scotland.
Lionsgate has UK rights and Sierra Affinity is selling internationally.
Welsh also wrote Trainspotting.
