Comic book creator and filmmaker Kevin VanHook will write the screenplay based on the first novel in the sci-fi trilogy by former NASA pilot Charles Justiz.

Houston-based Rainmaker Films will develop the film with executive producer Grant Guthrie and his Los Angeles-based partner Fred Kuehnert. The producers are aiming for a release in the fourth quarter 2012.

“I’m particularly excited to write the movie version of Specific Impulse,” VanHook said.  “It gives me the opportunity to play with a couple of concepts that have always fascinated me: machine intelligence and space exploration.”

Kuehnert and VanHook previously collaborated on The Fallen Ones for the SyFy Channel. VanHook created the comic book Bloodshot for Valiant Comics and has worked in visual effects.
