Fox International Productions (FIP) has revealed that its spiritual drama Nosso Lar is not only the biggest local language release at the ten-day mark but became the fastest local title to reach one million admissions on its fifth day.
The film just pulled off the biggest second weekend for a local title in Brazil and held on to top spot as $2.8m (4.95m BRL) from 434 screens elevated the running total to $9.5m (16.58m BRL).
It drew roughly 450,000 admissions and fell by 15% from the $3.43m (5.99m BRL) opening weekend, the second biggest for a local title behind Chico Xavier. Only Fox’s Se Eu Fosse Voce 2 has done better in the local language pantheon. After a considerbly longer run it ended on $26.8m (47.5m BRL) and 5.7m admissions.
“To be so close to breaking our own previous record in Brazil for highest grossing local film is just fantastic,” FIP president Sanford Panitch said. “Fox Brazil managing director and Patricia Kamitsuji and our head of development Cristina Fanato are doing a superb job and will have their hands full shepherding our six-film slate that we have set in motion for 2010.”
Nosso Lar stars Renato Prieto, Paulo Goulart, Werner Schunnemann and Othon Bastos and tells the story of a man’s journey through the world of spirits, based on the bestseller channelled by the medium Chico Xavier.
Nosso Lar is the first spiritual drama to be developed in Brazil but the third to go on release after Bezerra de Menezes througth Fox Brazil and Chico Xavier through Downtown-Sony in April this year.
Budgeted at $11.1m, it is the most expensive local production to date.
