The horror filmmaker made the announcement on Wednesday (18) prior to the Feb 3 release of his latest feature The Innkeepers through Magnolia. West is producing with Ted Hope, UTA represents domestic rights and Celluloid Nightmares handles international sales.

In The Side Effect, Tyler will play a woman who learns she is inexplicably pregnant after spending several months in space as part of a pharmaceutical company test.

Further casting is underway ahead of an anticipated start of photography early in the second quarter. West is producing with Hope, whose Double Hope Films will be shepherding production.

“I am very excited to work with Ti, who I think is a super talented exciting young filmmaker,” Tyler said. “The role of [Catherine] Rigby is a fantastic character within a great thriller and I am looking forward to sinking my teeth into the part.”

“Although it is still somewhat of a horror film, [The Side Effect] is much more psychological than any of my previous efforts,” West said. “It was essential that I find an actress who could portray a wide range of emotion, and always earn the audience’s sympathy no matter what the situation.  As soon as I sat down with Liv, it was obvious she was the one.”

“I was blown away by Ti’s films,” Hope said. “I wondered why the studios and big budget guys hadn’t yet scooped him up. His movies are note-perfect displays of tension and tone. Each aspect of his filmmaking serves the whole. It’s rare to see such talent on display.”

“We were not going to let the trio of Ti, Ted and Liv get into anyone else’s hands,” Nate Bolotin and Nick Spicer of Celluloid Nightmares partners XYZ Films, said. “It’s a perfect collaboration and the side effect of us teaming up is going to inevitably be a great film. None of them have hit a false note yet, and this is clearly an example where the net result will exceed the sum of the parts.”
