Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos flew to Colombia this week to meet President Juan Manuel Santos to discuss the upcoming original crime series Narcos as well as the country’s new cash rebate system.

Gaumont International Television is producing the series, the latest international production to take advantage of Colombia’s 40%-20% production rebate incentive.

Narcos recounts the story of the war between the cocaine drug cartels and Colombian law enforcement and other agencies. Carlo Bernard, Chris Brancato, Paul Eckstein and Doug Miro are the writers.

Series director Jose Padilha also took part in the meeting, alongside Gaumont producers Eric Newman and Elisa Roth, Andres Calderon from Dynamo Productions, Proimagenes Colombia director Claudia Triana and Colombia film commissioner Silvia Echeverri.

Alongside President Santos on behalf of the Colombian government were minister of commerce, industry and tourism Cecilia Álvarez-Correa, minister of culture Mariana Garcés and minister of information technology and communications Diego Molano.

The cash rebate stems from Law 1556 and applies to services provided by Colombian entities or people domiciled or residing in the country.

The 33, the Antonio Banderas starrer about the trapped Chilean miners, was the first international production to benefit from the incentive and wrapped production earlier this year.

The Colombian Film Commission, a division of Proimagenes Colombia, manages the rebate.
