‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’

JUNE 25 UPDATE: Universal’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom scored the studio’s second highest North America debut on a confirmed $148m, as a trio of releases crossed significant milestones.

Fox’s Deadpool 2 hit $300m, Warner Bros’ Ocean’s 8 reached $100m, and Solo: A Star Wars Story reached $200m. Pixar’s Incredibles 2 will cross $350m on Monday.

Focus Features documentary Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, a documentary about the beloved American TV personality Fred Rogers, surged five places to number 10 in its third weekend. The distributor expanded the theatre count from 96 to 348 and $1.8m boosted the running total to $4.1m.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom ranks as as Universal’s second highest debut behind Jurassic World, which arrived on $208.8m in June 2015. Spaniard J.A. Bayona directed the tentpole that reunites Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard with their CGI prehistoric stars. The film opened in 4,475 venues, averaging $33,078.

The debut means two films (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Incredibles 2) have debuted on more than $100m in back-to-back non-holiday weekends for the first time. In another notable achievement, weekly box office crossed $400m in North America last week for the third time this year. Weekly box office crossed $400m only twice last year, in December.

Pixar’s Incredibles 2 in second place will cross $350m on Monday after two weekends and becomes the animation titan’s fourth highest release as it added $80.3m through Buena Vista to stand at $349.8m.

The family smash has soared past the 2004 original’s $261.4m final tally, which adjusts for inflation to $344.3m, and will overtake the $356.5m final gross of Inside Out within days to rank third, with Toy Story 3’s $415m mark well within its sights. Finding Dory is the leader on $486.3m.

Lucasfilm’s Solo: A Star Wars Story at number six reached $200m in its fifth session and added $4.5m for $202.6m through Buena Vista. Warner Bros’ Ocean’s 8 crossed $100m in its third weekend, ranking third on $11.5m for $100.3m, and Fox’s Deadpool 2 in fifth place crossed $300m in its sixth weekend, adding $5.3m for $304.2m.

A24’s horror release Hereditary stayed put in seventh place on $3.6m for $34.8m after three, while last weekend’s new release from Columbia Pictures Superfly fell 50.4% and two slots to number eight on $3.4m for $15.3m.

IFC opened spy drama The Catcher Was A Spy starring Paul Rudd at number 23 on $114,771 in 49 sites. SPC release Boundaries starring Christopher Plummer and Vera Farmiga at number 39 on $29,552 from five. The distributor went ahead with the release after inflammatory remarks last week by cast member Peter Fonda amid the crisis over the US government’s controversial migration separation policy.

Box office for the top 12 climbed 3.6% on last weekend as it generated $271.3m to gain 103.9% on the comparable session in 2017, when Transformers: The Last Knight opened on a dismal $44.7m over three days.

This week’s wide releases are Sicario: Day Of The Soldado starring Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin through Columbia Pictures, and Lionsgate-Summit’s comedy Uncle Drew.
