Executive director, Belas Artes Grupo
- Studied film at FAAP in Sao Paulo
- Joined Pandora Filmes in 2015, initially working in programming
In the independent and arthouse cinema space, there is a subtle difference between films destined for success and those that perform more timidly at the box office, despite being just as good in objective terms.
This is one of the lessons that Brito has learned and still seeks to master as executive director of Belas Artes Group. In a role she has held since 2020, Brito handles acquisitions for the three companies that are part of the Sao Paulo-based group: distributor Pandora Filmes, streaming service À la Carte and cinema REAG Belas Artes.
“The type of films that once attracted 60,000 people to cinemas in Brazil sometimes can’t bring 4,000 nowadays,” says Brito, who is attending her fourth Cannes market this year. “With Zoom calls, it’s easy to negotiate titles but the markets are the major kickoffs for most acquisitions for us.”
This year she will keep an eye out for the films that take risks, which she believes in the current climate have the best chance of success in Brazil. “We’re looking for more complex themes and original works, whether in the script or in filming style,” says Brito, citing as an example Limonov: The Ballad, which she acquired at Cannes last year and released in April in Brazil.
Brito is also looking to expand the offering of Korean titles in Pandora’s catalogue, after releasing Parasite to great success a few years ago. “It made a huge impact [in Brazil] and allowed us to open up to other genres of Korean cinema,” she says.
