BC Film Commission

BC Film Commission

Film Commission of the Year - city/region

Winner: BC Film Commission at Creative BC (Canada)

To lay claim to the film commission of the year crown, entrants needed an established reputation for exemplary service to international productions and to be a top filming destination of choice.

Judges were looking for evidence of a commission’s efforts to attract filmmakers, including the strength of local locations, incentives, studios and crew, along with its problem-solving approach, customer service, creativity and community contribution.

Winner BC Film Commission at Creative BC, Canada has been a pivotal force in establishing British Columbia as one of the world’s leading hubs for film and television production. BC Film Commission provides centralised support to incoming productions, with eight regional film commissions and offices offering expert local knowledge.

This joined-up approach sees the region generating close to $2.2bn (c$3bn) in production activity each year and employing more than 70,000 people. This growth is set to continue, with the BC government having invested in and raised local motion picture incentives. The commission’s submission pointed to its strong ties with Los Angeles-based studios, making it highly connected, collaborative and proven in creativity. Recent projects to have shot in BC include the second season of HBO’s The Last Of Us and Showtime’s Yellowjackets.

“Pushing for a new incentive shows they are listening and watching the flux in the industry,” noted one judge. “They are supporting their local industry by keeping competitive.”

Another judge said: “The strong tax credits coupled with Creative BC as a group putting the production front and centre of what they do made for a compelling case.”
