Self-taught producer Tobi Kyeremateng set foot in Cannes for the first time earlier this year, starting out in style – the premiere of Harry Lighton’s sub-dom tale Pillion, on which she was an associate producer through a BBC Film scheme.
She was also associate producer on Philippa Lowthorpe’s bigger-budget H Is For Hawk starring Claire Foy, which shot in late 2024 and premiered at Telluride. “Pillion had this energy of mischief because of the kind of film we were making. H Is For Hawk was more grounded,” she says.
The south Londoner’s early experience of producing came through an apprenticeship at Battersea Arts Centre in 2013, which led to her collaborating with artists on their screen projects. Kyeremateng threw herself firmly into film when theatres closed during the pandemic. Her attitude was, and still is, “I just want to make cool shit with my friends.”
She founded production company Them Ones in 2021 and received backing from the 2025 BBC Small Indie Fund. Features in development with BBC Film include Dhegdheer, a horror written by Rocks lead Kosar Ali, and thriller Get Home Safe written by Rye Lane star and theatre pal Vivian Oparah. Kyeremateng is also working on a book adaptation alongside writer/director Caleb Femi.
Past highlights include E4 show How To Be A Person winning a TV Bafta in 2023, receiving the Netflix new talent award at the Women In Film & TV Awards the same year, and her short Leaving Ikorodu In 1999 being selected for BFI and Film4’s Future Takes scheme.
“If Fiona Lamptey and Joy Gharoro-Akpojotor had a baby, I hope that would be me,” she says of her career inspirations.
