Jason Bourne, Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Endless Poetry, The Girl With All The Gifts (opener) among line-up; artistic director Carlo Chatrian’s contract extended until 2020.

Locarno

This year’s Locarno Film Festival (August 3-13) will see 17 world premieres competing for the Pardo d’Oro in the International Competition, 16 features in the Piazza Grande strand and 15 first or second features in the new discoveries strand, 13 of which are world premieres.

Scroll down for the line-up

Locarno’s competition will include new films from Yousry Nasrallah, Radu Jude and duo Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov.

Piazza Grande screenings include Paul Greengrass’s Jason Bourne, Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or winner I, Daniel Blake, Gemma Arterton sci-fi The Girl With All The Gifts (which will open the festival), Kim Seong-hun’s The Tunnel and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Endless Poetry.

Swiss films at Locarno include one title in the Piazza Grande, with the return of Frédéric Mermoud; two films in the Concorso, with the return of Pardo d’Oro winner Milagros Mumentahler and the debut of director Michael Koch; and two films in the Cineasti del presente.

Meanwhile industry guests set to attend include Stefan Arndt, Dario Argento, Gemma Arterton, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, Roger Corman, Isabelle Huppert, Alejandro Jodorowsky, David Linde, Ken Loach, Jonas Mekas, Yousry Nasrallah, Rafi Pitts, Bill Pullman, Edgar Reitz, Arturo Ripstein, Rodrigo Teixeira, Jeremy Thomas and WANG Bing.

Bill Pullman will receive this year’s Excellence Award Moët & Chandon. The Pardo d’onore will go to Alejandro Jodorowsky.

This year’s retrospective is dedicated to ‘Cinema in the young Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1963’ while the three-year Open Doors focus spotlights eight countries in South Asia: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The festival’s new Signs of Life section explores “cinema at the frontiers, with new narrative forms and formal innovations” while the event’s Industry Days runs 6-8 August.

The international jury will be presided over by director Arturo Ripstein while the Concorso Cineasti del Presente jury head will be director Dario Argento.

Chatrian extension

Festival president Marco Solari today announced that the festival’s board of directors have agreed to extend the contract of artistic director Carlo Chatrian until 2020.

He also announced the appointment of Nadia Dresti — currently delegate of the artistic director and head of international — to the post of deputy artistic direction, and Raphaël Brunschwig, head of sponsorship, to that of deputy COO.

Festival director Chatrian dedicated this year’s festival to the late filmmakers Abbas Kiarostami and Michael Cimino.

In a nod to the recent migrant crisis, he also took the opportunity to issue a warning to those “people who shut themselves up at home and bar their doors to outsiders”:

“There is another wind that Locarno must face up to as well, sheltered as it is by surrounding mountains. I mean the wind that is sweeping across lands, across the seas, changing history and causing some people to shut themselves up at home, barring windows and doors against outsiders.

“To this stormy wind that isolates people in their own fears, the films selected for our program respond with stories that show the ties that bind individuals to communities. It has been said that films are like bridges: across their span of emotions they bring together different people, sharing stories and fragments of culture.
