The world premiere of Alexandre Rockwell’s The Projectionist will open Slamdance Film Festival (February 19-25, 2026), which returns to Los Angeles for the second year.
Quentin Tarantino and Jack Auen produced the film about a reclusive projectionist haunted by a wrongful conviction and the loss of his wife. He lives in solitude inside a fading arthouse cinema until one night when his past resurfaces, forcing him to confront the truth and rekindle love.
Vondie Curtis-Hall, Karyn Parsons, Kasi Lemmons, David Proval, Kevin Corrigan, and Michael Buscemi star.
“Celebrating our second year in LA, Slamdance is proud to shine an even brighter spotlight on the independent filmmakers who are redefining storytelling,” Slamdance co-founder Peter Baxter said. “With Rockwell’s masterful new film The Projectionist kicking off our slate, we can’t wait to bring new creative visions and new ideas in filmmaking to the LA community and beyond.”
This year Slamdance has partnered with Utopia to offer theatrical distribution opportunities to the festival award winners. Utopia’s technology suite including Powerflix and Altavod will offer aggregation and bespoke digital distribution opportunities to all competition films.
The festival’s Spotlight section will screen Seth Gordon’s The Untitled Ruby Slippers Documentary. Slamdance will also host the return of Market Monday on February 23, for a day of interactive panels and workshops focusing on distribution, film production in Los Angeles, and finding an audience. The full schedule will be announced at a later date.
The festival’s Los Angeles venues include the DGA, Landmark Sunset, and 2220 Arts. The virtual edition runs from February 24 to March 6, 2026, on the Slamdance Channel.
