Alison Oliver is replacing Daisy Edgar-Jones in the currently-titled Bad Bridgets, the second feature from Kneecap director Rich Peppiatt.
Production will get underway in late June on the film. LuckyChap is producing with Peppiatt and Trevor Birney’s Irish company Coup d’Etat. FilmNation is selling the title, having launched it at last year’s American Film Market, with WME Independent representing the US.
Bad Bridgets is written by Peppiatt, inspired by Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick’s 2023 book Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem, and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women.
Set in the 19th century, the film will see a mysterious letter set a young woman on a perilous journey from famine-ravaged Ireland to New York, joining the ranks of Irish ‘Bridgets’ who create mayhem in the city.
The script has been developed with the support of Queen’s University, Belfast.
Heads of department on the film include production designer James Price and costume designer Kate Hawley.
Peppiatt’s 2024 film Kneecap was the most-nominated debut feature in the history of the Bafta Film Awards with six nominations, winning for outstanding debut by a British writer, director, or producer. It also won six British Independent Film Awards, including Best British Independent Film.
Edgar-Jones has withdrawn from the film due to scheduling conflicts.
Wuthering Heights and Saltburn star Oliver, who was named a Screen UK-Ireland Star of Tomorrow in 2024, is represented by Curtis Brown and CAA.
Birney’s separate company Fine Point Films was listed in Screen’s Brit50 of leading UK production companies last year.
