‘All Of A Sudden’, ‘Gentle Monster’

Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s All Of A Sudden has landed second on Screen’s Cannes 2026 jury grid, while Marie Kreutzer’s Gentle Monster divided critics.

Hamaguchi’s All Of A Sudden scored a strong 3.1 average, putting it just behind current leader Fatherland (3.3). Scores included three four-stars (excellent) and seven three-stars (good), while The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw and Le Monde’s Mathieu Macheret were less impressed, rating the 195-minute drama with a two-star (average).

The score is below the Japanese filmmaker’s last time on the grid, in 2021 with Drive My Car which received a 3.5 average, but above his 2018 appearance with Asako I & II on 2.4.

All Of A Sudden follows a woman who runs a struggling nursing home and befriends a stage director with terminal cancer.

Kreutzer’s Gentle Monster received an average of 1.8. The Austrian filmmaker’s first time in competition brought in mixed reviews with Bradshaw and The Telegraph’s Robbie Collin both scoring it three-stars, while Katja Nicomedus (Die Ziet), Ben Kenigsberg (Rogerebert.com) and Macheret gave it one-star (poor).

Cannes habitué Léa Seydoux headlines Gentle Monster, in which a renowned pianist relocates her family to the countryside — only to uncover a life-changing truth that forces her to re-evaluate everything.

The next films to land on the jury grid will be Hirokazu Koreeda’s Sheep In A Box, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved and James Gray’s Paper Tiger.
