Ninth edition had ticket sales on par with last year’s best-ever sales.
The ninth edition of Bergman Week wrapped on Sunday (July 1), with festival organisers noting a “steady increase” in visitors across its 52 events and ticket sales on the same high level as last year’s.
This year’s edition, which ran June 25-July 1 on the island of Fårö in Sweden, closed with an outdoor radio performance of August Strindberg’s play The Dutchman, the first - of around 30 - of Ingmar Bergman’s adaptations of Strindberg for stage, radio and TV.
Double Palme D’Or winners the Dardenne brothers were this year’s guests of honour, on hand to present The Kid With A Bike, a talk on their films and a screening of their Bergman selection Brink Of Life.
Also screened at the festival was Woody Allen: A Documentary, along with the last TV interview with Bergman and two of the six programmes of a film series, Bergman’s Video, which will be broadcast by Swedish Television later this summer.
Celebrating their tenth anniversary next year, the Bergman Week will be held in a renovated and full-scale Bergman Center with the money they have received (SEK 15.6m) from the regional EC funds and Region Gotland.
