‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’

Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has grossed an estimated $10.1m from its first wave of international opening days led by $2.2m in France and $1.4m in South Korea.

Opening at number one in 17 markets on Wednesday the tentpole earned $900,000 in Germany and Indonesia. The latter territory secured a remarkable 99% market share to deliver the fourth highest opening day of the pandemic era as did Philippines, which generated $500,000.

Wakanda Forever grossed $800,000 in Thailand, $700,000 in Italy, and $500,000 in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The results combine with early Thursday previews including $4m in Latin America where the highlights are $1.5m in Mexico and $1m in Brazil as the film ranked top across the region.

The film is forecast to open upwards of $330m worldwide over the weekend according to sources, which would make it the third highest grossing global debut of the pandemic era behind 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home and this year’s Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness.

Disney executives estimate Wednesday’s first wave to be tracking 225% ahead of Black Adam in the same markets, 45% ahead of The Batman, and 27% behind 2018’s Black Panther which opened during Chinese New Year, and 31% below Thor: Love & Thunder, which opened during the holidays.

Market share ranges from 50% to 99%, with Wakanda Forever accounting for 70% in France where it claimed the third highest opening day of 2022 to date, and 86% in South Korea where the market continues to be impacted by the national mourning period in the wake of the deadly Halloween party crush in Seoul.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever continues to roll out this weekend and will be open in nearly all international markets by Sunday except China and Russia.

Thursday brings launches in Australia, Brazil and Mexico as well as Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE and the rest of the Middle East, Portugal, Ukraine, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Vietnam, Argentina and all the smaller Latin American territories.

Ryan Coogler returns as director and co-writer with Joe Robert Cole. The cast includes Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira, Winston Duke, Martin Freeman, Michaela Coel, and Tenoch Huerta.
