Brad Pitt’s Mediawan-backed Plan B production company has launched a European subsidiary headed by Clerkenwell Films executive producer Ed Macdonald.
Based in London, Plan B Europe will primarily focus on the production of series in the UK and across Europe.
Macdonald’s credits at Clerkenwell include Netflix hit Baby Reindeer and Channel 4’s The End of the F***ing World. At Plan B Europe, he will work closely with Nina Wolarsky, Plan B’s US-based head of television.
Plan B said the launch “will foster new co-productions between the United States and Europe,” building on Plan B’s upcoming projects with other Mediawan group production companies.
These include Weekend Rebels, the movie adaptation of the German film Weekend Warriors developed by Mediawan sibling Wiedemann & Berg for Apple, starring Mark Wahlberg and written and directed by Stephen Chbosky.
Plan B is led by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, and has been part of the Mediawan group since 2022.
The London launch follows a high profile few years for Plan B. Its recent releases include films F1, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Nickel Boys and Mickey 17, and television series Adolescence, Three Body Problem and Lego Masters.
Plan B is collaborating with the BBC Film on Raine Allen-Miller’s upcoming The Roots Manoeuvre and Film4 on Phillippa Lowthorpe’s adaptation of H is For Hawk, which premiered this week at the Telluride Film Festival.
Mediawan said the Plan B Europe launch is aimed at “accelerating existing co-productions, generating new synergies and finding innovative ways to finance projects, with the UK’s unique position as a bridge between the American and European industries and as one of Europe’s most attractive hubs for film and TV funding. “
“Building on our artistic ambition, we’re excited to deepen our commitment to premium television and to explore new creative partnerships across the UK and Europe,” said Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner in a statement.
“The creation of Plan B Europe marks a key milestone in our international growth strategy and further strengthens the European DNA of the Mediawan group,” said Pierre-Antoine Capton, CEO and co-founder of Mediawan Group and Elisabeth d’Arvieu, CEO of Mediawan Pictures.
“I can’t wait to start this new chapter, to build upon Plan B’s legacy and to keep doing what I love — making vivid, high-quality television with the most talented storytellers in the world,” said Macdonald.
