British Oscar winner Christopher Nolan has scaled another pinnacle in Hollywood and been elected president of the Directors Guild of America (DGA).
Nolan, who won the directing Academy Award in 2024 for Oppenheimer and is working on summer 2026 tentpole The Odyssey for Universal, called the appointment “one of the greatest honours of my career” on Saturday (September 20).
The guild announced the news at its biennial national convention, when 167 delegates representing more than 19,500 members in the election also voted in a new suite of officers and members of the national board of directors.
“To be elected president of the Directors Guild of America is one of the greatest honours of my career,” Nolan said. “Our industry is experiencing tremendous change, and I thank the guild’s membership for entrusting me with this responsibility.”
The filmmaker, whose credits include the Dark Knight trilogy, Interstellar, Inception, and Memento, said he looked forward to working with predecessor Lesli Linka Glatter and the board “to achieve important creative and economic protections for our members”.
Glatter was president during the 2023 Hollywood strikes. The DGA’s contract comes up for renewal next year.
Laura Belsey was re-elected national vice president and Paris Barclay was re-elected secretary treasurer.
Other elected officers were: first vice-president Todd Holland; second vice-president Ron Howard; third vice-president Gina M. Prince-Bythewood; fourth vice-president Seith Mann; fifth vice-president Millicent Shelton; sixth vice-president Lily Olszewski; and assistant secretary-treasurer Joyce Thomas.
