EXCLUSIVE: Production has begun in Ireland on The Weir, the latest feature from Irish filmmaker and playwright Conor McPherson.
Curzon and Break Out Pictures have jointly acquired distribution rights for the UK and Ireland from the producers of the film, that is based on McPherson’s Laurence Oliver Award-winning play of the same name.
Brendan Gleeson, Owen McDonnell, Seán McGinley, Kate Phillips and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor star, with the feature retaining the cast from the stage play.
Set in a remote pub in rural Ireland, four local men gather for their nightly pints. Their routine is disrupted when a Dublin woman is introduced to the group. To impress their new companion, the group trades eerie local folklore and ghost stories. The mood takes a turn when the newcomer reveals a tragic, personal reason for her arrival.
Producers are Kate Horton of UK’s Kate Horton Productions, Anne Clarke of Ireland’s Landmark Productions, Andrea Calderwood and Gail Egan of the UK’s Potboiler Productions and Lara Hickey of Ireland’s Copper Alley Productions, with the support of Screen Ireland, in association with Curzon Film.
Executive producers are Conor McPherson, Brendan Gleeson, Keith Potter for Screen Ireland, and Philip Knatchbull and Louisa Dent for Curzon Film.
The play recently received multiple Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards nominations, including best ensemble and best revival of a play, after it was first performed in 1997.
