
Disney executives used the weekend’s annual D23 convention in Anaheim in Southern California to tease a 2028 release slate that appears on paper at least to rival any previous year in the studio’s storied history.
Executives have scheduled Untitled Ghost Rider starring recently-announced lead Ryan Gosling for July 28. Gosling reunites with Shawn Levy, his director on the May 28 2027 summer tentpole Star Wars: Starfighter.
Early summer 2028 brings Untitled X-Men on May 5. Marvel Studios’ first stab at the iconic franchise since Dark Phoenix in 2019, when Disney closed its acquisition of 20th Century Studios, stars Adam Driver and a host of young talent including Sadie Sink and Inde Navarrette from summer smashes Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Obsession, respectively, as well as Samara Weaving and Kit Connor.
Lilo & Stitch 2 opens on May 26 followed by Pixar’s The Incredibles 3 on June 16
Untitled Disney will open on February 11, followed by Pixar’s Ghost Market on March 10, and the live-action remake of the hit 2010 Rapunzel adaptation Tangled on March 31.
Late 2028 brings the November 22 release of Clay starring Kieran Culkin in the animated story of a man tasked to serve as mentor to a ball of clay as they journey through a magical forest. Black Panther 3 starring recently-announced UK actor and former Screen Star Of Tomorrow David Jonsson is schedued for December 15.
Searchlight Pictures horror film Monitor moves up two weeks to April 16 2027. Coming in 2029 are Untitled Marvel on November 9 and Pixar’s Coco 2 on November 21.
Disney’s biggest year at the box office was $13bn worldwide in 2019 when the studio’s slate included Avengers: Endgame, Frozen II, Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, and The Lion King. The company just crossed $4bn at the global box office and has Hexed and Avengers: Doomsday coming out later this year.
