‘Triangle Of Sadness’

The European Film Academy has announced the nominees for the main categories of the European Film Awards, which takes place on December 10 in Reykjavík and will celebrate the best of European Film culture.

The five shortlisted films for the European Film award all have festival pedigree.

Swedish director Ruben Ostlund’s class warfare comedy Triangle of Sadness, winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes, is shortlisted, and is also nominated in three other categories: European director, European actor (for Zlatko Burić) and European screenwriter (Ostlund).

Cannes was also the launch platform for Lukas Dhont Close for Belgium, which is shortlisted for best European Film. The story of two boys whose tender friendship is tragically broken, it shared Cannes’ Grand Prix with French director Claire Denis’ Stars At Noon. It is also nominated in the European director, European actor (Eden Dambrine) and European screenwriter (Dhont and Angleo Tijssens) cateogries.

Ali Abbasi’s Holy Spider also makes the best film shortlist. It too debuted in Cannes, winning the best actress prize in official competition for Zar Amir-Ebrahimi. Based on the real-life story of an Iranian serial killer whose victims were sex workers, the film follows a female journalist investigating the murders taking place in the holy city of Mashhad. Amir-Ebrahimi also gets a nod for her performance from the European Film Academy.

Marie Kreutzer’s historical drama Corsage makes the best film shortlist as well. The film is also nominated in the European director and actress (Vicky Krieps) categories. Corsage premiered in Un Certain Regard, where it picked up a best actor award for Krieps, who plays the disgruntled Austrian Empress Elisabeth.

Carla Simon’s Alcarràs is also nominated for the film award, having previously won the Golden Bear at the Berlinale. The film about a family of peach farmers in a small Catalan village, whose life changes when the owner of their large estate dies and his lifetime heir decides to sell the land, is also nominated in the European screenwriter category for Simon and Arnau Vilaro.

The 4,400 members of the European Film Academy will now vote for the winners who will be announced at the European Film Awards ceremony on 10 December 2022.

The winners of the Excellence Awards in the categories European Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design, Make-up & Hair, Original Score, Sound and Visual Effects will be determined by an eight-member jury consisting of representatives of the different arts and crafts and will be announced on 23 November.
