EXCLUSIVE: Thailand’s GDH 559 has picked up local distribution rights to Japanese features Love On Trial and Kinki – both of which are set to screen at the ongoing Bangkok International Film Festival (BKKIFF).
Koji Fukada’s Love On Trial was acquired from mk2 Films and GDH is planning a theatrical release in the first half of 2026.
The drama stars Kyoko Saito as a J-pop idol who is taken to court after violating a ‘no love’ clause in her contract that forbids her from dating. The film debuted as a Cannes Premiere in May and will play in the Special Presentation section of BKIFFF.
Japanese mystery horror Kinki by Koji Shiraishi was acquired from Nippon TV and is set to screen in the Bangkok Midnight section of BKKIFF. It is based on 2023 web novel About A Place In The Kinki Region by Seisuji.
Starring Miho Kanno and Eiji Akaso, the film follows a writer who learns that a series of urban legends all have a connection to a certain location in the Kinki region of Japan. The film was released by Warner Bros. in Japan on August 8 and GDH is set to open the feature in Thailand in Q4 this year.
Since venturing into theatrical distribution of international features with A24’s Past Lives as its first non-Thai title in 2023, GDH has released eight films, six of which are direct acquisitions under its business unit Out Of The Box.
Past Lives proved a commercial success, along with Japanese animated feature Blue Giant and The Substance. GDH has also distributed films from other companies such as Michael Mann’s Ferrari for N8 and Cannes’ Critics’ Week grand prize winner A Useful Ghost for 185 Films.
The Bangkok-based GDH and Out of the Box are among the Thai companies taking part in BKKIFF’s Talad Nang film market, which opens its doors today (October 1) at the Pinnacle Hall of Iconsiam.
BKKIFF runs from September 27 to October 15, screening more than 200 films, and marks its first edition since 2009.
