Fatih Akin’s Amrum and Mascha Schilinski’s Sound Of Falling are among five titles shortlisted as Germany’s entry for the Oscars’ best international feature award.
Sound Of Falling premiered in Cannes Competition and follows a century of trauma in rural Germany, whilst post-war coming-of-age drama Amrum debuted in the Cannes Premiere section.
The other three titles are Joachim A. Lang’s Cranko, a biopic of dancer and choreographer John Cranko played by Sam Riley; Andres Veiel’s documentary Riefenstahl about the controversial German filmmaker; and Dennis Gansel’s anti-war drama The Tiger, which is set to become Amazon MGM Studios’ first German original to get a theatrical release.
The five were submitted to the German Films organisation by producers, with the independent Oscar selection committee comprising representatives from key national bodies such as the German Producers‘ Alliance, the German World Sales Association, the German Film Critics Association and exhibitors guild AG-Kino.
Last year, Germany submitted Mohammad Rasoulof’s The Seed Of The Sacred Fig, which made it to the nominations stage.
