Helena Bonham Carter, Caitríona Balfe and Screen Star of Tomorrow 2025 Emma Laird have joined the cast of Richard Eyre’s The Housekeeper, as the UK shoot gets underway in Cornwall and at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire from February 9.
They join previously announced Anthony Hopkins in the Cornwall-set romance that fictionalises the inspiration behind Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca. A housekeeper (Balfe) and a young writer (Laird) are drawn into a secret and intoxicating affair.
Embankment is selling the project.
The producers are Julia Taylor-Stanley for Artemis Films and Kevin Loader for Embankment. Munich and London-based Night Train Media has boarded the project as a producer and principal financier, with Herbert L. Kloiber producing. Additional finance comes from Head Gear Films, M2 Mediapost, FireFrame Studios and Screen Cornwall.
UK novelist Rose Tremain has written the script, based on her short story and forthcoming novel, to be published later this year.
Eyre’s credits include The Children Act and Notes On A Scandal.
“Assembling a cast of such calibre speaks to the power of Rose’s storytelling, and to Richard’s standing amongst the great British directors,” said producer Taylor-Stanley.
“Rose Tremain has written a brilliant screenplay which is dark and surprising and mysterious, and we look forward to making a film which lives up to its promise,“ added Eyre.
”The Housekeeper promises audiences an intoxicating blend of passion, elegance, and emotional truth,” noted producer Kloiber.
Previously announced cast of Uma Thurman and Phoebe Dynevor are no longer attached to the project.
