‘Irvine Welsh: Reality is not Enough’, ‘Rhino’

EXCLUSIVE: Kaleidoscope Film Distribution (KFD) is headed to Cannes next week with three new titles on its slate, including Irvine Welsh: Reality is not Enough.

The Irvine Welsh documentary explores the Scottish author’s influence and the themes of class, mortality, creativity and identity in his work. Directed by Poly Styrene: I Am a Cliché and Tish filmmaker Paul Sng, it features readings by Liam Neeson, Stephen Graham, Nick Cave and Ruth Negga. KFD holds world rights; the film is produced by Natasha Dack, and was previously titled I Am Irvine Welsh with Noah Media Group then handling sales.

The company is also representing world rights on Rhino, narrated by Tom Hardy. Directed by Tom Martienssen who spent four years embedded in Kenya with wildlife rangers, Rhino follows the ambitious mission to relocate 21 black rhinos to safety, under threat from poachers and environmental extremes. It is produced by Martienssen, Stephen Robert Morse, Max Peltz and Max Gertler-Jaffe for the UK’s Dustoff Films.

KFD has also boarded worldwide rights on First World War tank drama Landship, starring Vin Hawke, David Dobson and Jeffrey Mundell. Inspired by real events, the film follows a British tank crew trapped behind enemy lines during the Battle of Passchendaele in 1917. It is directed by Callum Burn, and produced by Burn and Andrew Burn, who have previously made war titles Lancaster Skies, Spitfire Over Berlin and Battle Over Britain.

KFD will also show new content for Leon Joosen’s UK animation The Land of Sometimes, including Helena Bonham Carter’s completed musical number. Currently in production, the film also features the voices of Ewan McGregor, Asa Butterfield, Terry Jones and Mel Brooks; it follows twins transported to a magical realm where wishes have unexpected consequences.

A new trailer for supernatural survival thriller Ithaqua, currently in post-production, will be shown. KFD has worldwide rights on both titles.

The company will also showcase newly-restored Hammer Film classics available for worldwide sales, including 4K restorations of Shatter, Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter, Four Sided Triangle, The Quatermass Xperiment and Quatermass 2, plus HD titles and contemporary Hammer productions.

“From powerful docs to commercial genre fare and prestige animation, we’re bringing buyers a strong, well-rounded offering with something for every market,” said Kaleidoscope CEO Spencer Pollard.

Cannes Film Festival takes place from May 13-24, with the market from May 13-21.
