The film was met with a reported 20-minute standing ovation following its premiere last night (May 22), but critical reviews have been mixed. Screen’s own Lee Marshall called it “a sprawling, undisciplined melodrama”.

Set in 1932, 1937 and 2017, La Bola Negra explores queer desire through the intertwined stories of three men. The cast includes musician Guitarricadelafuente, Penelope Cruz and Glenn Close.

Also landing mid-pack was Dhont’s Coward which currently also has a 2 sor far, with two critics left to score.

The film divided critics with Mathieu Macharet giving it a zero star (bad), followed by three one-stars, while there were also four three-stars in the mix.

As it stands, it is below Dhont’s previous entry, 2022’s Close, which received a 2.4 from the critics. Coward explores masculinity and vulnerability through the lens of men fighting in the First World War.

The final films to land on the grid will be Valeska Grisebach’s The Dreamed Adventure and Lea Mysius’s The Birthday Party. Fatherland is still the grid leader with a 3.3 average.
