EXCLUSIVE: Juno Films has acquired all US rights to Anissa Bonnefont’s documentary La Scala: The Force Of Destiny from Paris-based Ginger & Fed.
The feature charts the run-up to the opening night of La Forza Del Destino, Giuseppe Verdi’s opera that kicked off La Scala’s 2024 season in Milan, Italy, and was broadcast live on Rai 1 as opera enthusiasts from around the world flock to Milan.
Bonnefont and cinematographer Martina Cocco captured initial rehearsals all the way up to the premiere, focusing on elite singers like soprano Anna Netrebko, baritone Ludovic Tézier, and tenor Brian Jagde, conductor Riccardo Chailly and stage director Leo Muscato, as well as the 900 artisans, dancers, musicians and technicians.
La Scala: The Force Of Destiny will premiere on March 27 at the Quad Cinema in New York and will get its West Coast premiere on March 28 as part of the Laemmle Culture Vulture series, followed by a limited theatrical release.
“Anissa’s film is a tour de force in revealing how one of the world’s most acclaimed opera houses prepares for its annual premiere,” Juno Films CEO Vondah Elizabeth Sheldon said. “Watching the film brings the magic of opera to the big screen and provides a rare glimpse into what is required before the opening curtain.”
Sheldon negotiated the deal with head of international film sales Sabine Chemaly of Ginger & Fed on behalf of the filmmakers.
Federation Studios’ Myriam Weil and MDE Films’ Francesco Melzi d’Eril served as producers on the documentary, which marks the first feature documentary commissioned by Rai Documentari and France Télévisions.
