Amah’s Miseries is produced by Wong Kew-soon from Malaysia, Gene Yao from Taiwan and Chow Wai-thong from Singapore, the same team behind Chong’s upcoming Malaysian riot drama Snow In Midsummer. Chong’s feature debut The Story Of Southern Islet won best new director at the Golden Horse Awards in 2020.

The jury comprising Eddie Fong Ling-ching, Clara Law, Aileen Li and Sandee Chan, praised Amah’s Miseries for “its humanistic portrayal of Malaysia’s disappearing amah culture, and its reflections on the pressures and conflicts faced by female characters against the backdrop of an urban construction project amid rapid modernization”.

This year’s FPP showcased a record 68 projects, including 40 in-development film projects, eight works-in-progress film projects and 20 series projects. The selection also included new Chinese-language directors, international co-productions and foreign filmmakers.

A total of 1,623 meetings were conducted over three days from November 15-17, setting a new record. They were attended by 118 industry professionals from Taiwan and beyond. More overseas guests were able to take part on-site following the end of Taiwan’s mandatory Covid quarantine and long-lasting pandemic border controls.

Overseas guests included Toronto programmer Giovanna Fulvi, Shelly Kraicer from Sydney Film Festival, Udine Far East Film Festival director Sabrina Baracetti, Kim Chi-Hyung from Korea’s CJ ENM, Franck Priot of France’s Ghosts City Films, producer Xavier Rocher of France’s La Fabrica Nocturna Production and WME Independent’s Singapore-based agent Nelson Mok.
