Hong Kong–based Moebius Entertainment has secured international sales rights in Asia-Pacific for Double Happiness, following its world premiere at Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF).
The comedy-drama, directed by Taiwanese filmmaker Joseph Chen-Chieh Hsu, follows a groom-to-be who must orchestrate two weddings at the same hotel for the sake of his divorced parents, who refuse to attend the same ceremony.
The cast is led by Taiwan’s Kuan-Ting Liu of award-winning dramas A Sun and Old Fox; Hong Kong’s Jennifer Yu from In Broad Daylight and Sisterhood; and acclaimed Taiwanese actress Kuei-mei Yang, known for Vive L’Amour and Eat Drink Man Woman.
It is produced by Clifford Miu of Splash Pictures who is behind acclaimed features American Girl and Yen And Ai-Lee.
Director Hsu’s 2020 feature debut Little Big Women played at Busan and Tokyo and was a major box office hit in Taiwan.
The deal was closed during TIFF, where the film bowed in the World Focus section on October 28.
Moebius CEO Fred Tsui previously worked with producer Miu, handling sales of 2021’s American Girl while at Media Asia Film Distribution.
“Clifford’s films have a rare blend of humour, empathy, and cross-cultural resonance,” said Tsui. “Double Happiness captures the chaos and warmth of modern Asian family life in a way that feels both universal and deeply personal.”
Moebius’s current slate includes Chinese film Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts, which has picked up awards at Rome, Shanghai and First film festivals. Further titles include Peter Chan’s She Has No Name and She Has A Name, Philip Yung’s Papa, Jame Hung’s My First Of May, and Nick Cheung’s Peg O’ My Heart.
