Movistar Plus+ chief exec Daniel Domenjó has been dismissed from his role at the Spanish pay TV and streaming giant.

The move from Marc Murtra, president of Movistar parent Telefónica, comes 14 months after the former Satisfaction Iberia boss took up the position.

According to Spanish business title El Economista, the position will be filled by Alfonso Gómez Palacio, currently the executive president of Telefónica in Latin America.

In addition to becoming the new chief exec of Movistar Plus+, the Colombian-born executive will also join the management committee of Telefónica Spain.

Rumours that Domenjó would be dismissed began circulating in the Spanish industry a month ago.

Just a few months after joining Movistar Plus+, the exec headlined an event at the Teatro Real in Madrid, where he outlined plans to expand to a wider audience and invest more heavily in entertainment, a field in which he has worked for much of his career.

However, despite changes in management over the past year, Movistar Plus+ has maintained a similar trajectory, boosted by the success of feature films like Sirat and Los Domingos, and dramas including Anatomía de un Instante.

The future of Movistar Plus+ has been an increasingly frequent topic of conversation among industry circles and with Domenjó’s dismissal, even more questions arise.

The initial impression is that Telefónica’s audiovisual business will be under review and will almost certainly undergo changes, if not cutbacks.

Some suggest that Movistar Plus+ may eventually disappear. Since 2017, under Domingo Corral’s leadership in original production, the company has invested millions of euros in series and feature films, both fiction and documentary, as well as acquiring high-value sports rights, such as those for La Liga and the Champions League. Such investments are not always easy to recoup.

As reported by several mainstream media outlets, Gómez Palacio’s background is directly linked to business management. Javier de Paz remains as non-executive chairman of Movistar Plus+.

Movistar Plus+ ended 2025 with 3.8m subscribers, according to the company. Last year it added 278,000 customers, gaining subscribers in both 2024 and 2025.

“The growth of Movistar Plus+ demonstrates that our model works: investing in the best content, the best sports, and creative talent in Spain. We want to continue being a driving force for the audiovisual industry and an increasingly open platform, capable of reaching more homes and connecting with new audiences without sacrificing the quality that defines us,” Domenjó stated just over a month ago.

The unit is also undergoing staff reductions due to the workforce reduction plan being implemented by Telefónica. Among those leaving are Rubén Fernández Loa (acquisitions) and Jorge Ortiz de Landázuri (original non-fiction).

Before joining Movistar Plus+, Domenjó co-founded Satisfaction Iberia, the Latin American subsidiary of the French group Satisfaction.

To facilitate a transition, he will remain with Telefónica’s pay-TV service and platform for a few months. His next professional move has not yet been announced.
