Netflix’s Grenfell: Uncovered won the audience award at UK documentary festival Sheffield DocFest (June 18-22).
Olaide Sadiq’s film world premiered at the festival and follows the forensic investigation into the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire that killed 72 people.
Elsewhere, Anastasiya Miroshnichenko‘s Welded Together took home the grand jury award in the international competition. Centring on alcoholism in Belarus, the jury called the film an “honest and delicate portrayal” of a young woman struggling to keep her family. A special mention was given to US feature The Gas Station Attendant from Karla Murthy.
The first feature jury award went to US documentary Comparsa, directed by Vickie Curtis and Doug Anderson, about gender-based violence in Guatemala. A special mention went to Ecuadorian feature Carmela And The Walkers by Luis Herrera and Esteban Coloma.
Hind Meddeb’s Sudan, Remember Us won the Tim Hetherington award. The film, which first premiered at Venice Film Festival last year, follows the overthrow of Sudanese leader Oamr Al-Bashir in 2019 and the subsequent civil war that followed.
Sheffield DocFest’s 32nd edition saw a 20% increase in the number of tickets sold year-on-year, according to the festival.
