Projects by Irish genre writer-director Ivan Kavanagh and Palestinian writer-director Razan Madhoon are among 62 selected for this year’s co-production market at Rome’s MIA film and TV event, which runs from October 6-10.
The 62 projects in development span films, animation, documentaries and scripted TV dramas.
There are 16 feature film projects in development being presented at MIA, among them Kavanagh’s Fugue. Produced by Ireland’s Fantastic Films, it is billed as a haunting tale of possession, sacrifice, and eternal return, where the sins of the dead echo in Bach’s The Art of Fugue. Kavanagh’s previous credits include Son and The Canal. P
Palestinian writer-director Razan Madhoon is bringing family drama The Good Spirit. Produced through Meraki Films, the Palestine-UK co-production is inspired by true events in the Gaza Strip, and follows a young woman who rescues an injured stray dog despite local beliefs that dogs drive away good spirits.
Ukrainian director Egor Olesov’s The Old Gun, produced by Forecast Pictures and Heroes Creative Studio, follows a surgeon who loses his wife and daughter during the occupation of his village.
Additionally, 16 animation projects have been selected, 15 documentaries and 15 TV dramas.
The animation projects include director Eléa Gobbe-Mévellec (The Swallows of Kabul)’s new film The Northern Star (Serveka), produced by the Czech Republic’s Hausboot and France’s Les Films du Cygne. It is the story of escape and redemption through the journey of a seventeen-year-old girl fleeing North Korea.
Meanwhile, seven films have been selected for C EU Soon, the work-in-progress programme for European films in production and post-production, seeking international distribution. The films compete for the Screen International Award.
The selected films are: Laura Haby’s Beyond The Mountains Of Acrocero; Katharina Rivilis I’ll Be Gone In June; Sergio Castro San Martín’s Il Cileno; Valéry Rosier’s Parkings; Laura García Alonso’s Runner; Valeriu Andriuta’s The Circle, Tomasz Wolski’s The Incident.
New for 2025, MIA is launching the Book Adaptation Forum (BAF), designed to connect publishers, producers, literary agents, and audiovisual professionals for literary adaptations.
