The Actor Awards

The Screen Actors Guild Awards are being re-branded as The Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA – or simply as The Actor Awards.

US actors union SAG-AFTRA said the change was intended “to provide clearer recognition in terms of what the show is about for our domestic and global audiences.”

The awards are an important bellwether for the Academy Awards, particularly in the latter’s performance categories, and the ceremony at which they are presented, screened live around the world by Netflix since 2024, takes place in the final run-up to the Oscar ceremony.

This season’s Actor Awards ceremony is set for March 1 next year, two weeks before the Oscars.

SAG-AFTRA said that the new moniker comes from the name of the statuettes presented to its honourees each year. Awards’ voting, submission and eligibility rules will remain the same, the Guild confirmed, and ‘For Your Consideration’ materials will continue to use the Screen Actors Guild Awards name through the current pre-nomination voting period that ends on January 5.

Jon Brockett, showrunner and executive producer of The Actor Awards show, commented: “Since the beginning, our statue has been called ‘The Actor’ and we’re a show that’s entirely about actors, so this new name is a perfect next step in the show’s evolution. The Actor Awards presented by SAG-AFTRA gives viewers in 190-plus countries an immediate understanding of who we are and what we’re about.”

Actor Awards committee chair JoBeth Williams added: “As an actor and a longtime SAG-AFTRA member and chair of the Awards Committee, I’ve always loved that our show is actor focused - actors voting for actors - because we understand innately the work that goes into a performance. The Actor Awards makes that crystal clear to audiences everywhere: when they tune in, they know they’re going to see their favourite actors celebrated by those who truly know the craft.”
