Virtual Audiovisual Production White Paper

Virtual Production Innovation

Winner: Virtual Audiovisual Production White Paper & EI Escorial Digital Assets (Spain Film Commission, Spain)

This category recognises a company or studio that has used virtual production to increase the efficiency of workflows and decrease the environmental impact of a production, while still producing a high quality, engaging storytelling experience.

In choosing the winner, the judges noted how Spain Film Commission (SFC) has played a key role in transforming the country’s audiovisual industry, recognising its innovative approach and its ability to generate a positive impact on the sector. In 2024, SFC published a white paper on virtual audiovisual production in Spain and the creation of a detailed 3D model of the famed El Escorial monastery, a pioneering project that helps position Spain as a leader in virtual production and an inclusive destination for all types of productions.

The white paper establishes a set of best practices and guidelines for virtual production and was developed in collaboration with experts from various fields, including intellectual property lawyers, audiovisual creators and other industry stakeholders.

The judges were impressed by the commission’s proactive approach to this issue. “This is evidence of how SFC is pushing to make the region an attractive, cutting-edge proposition across all sectors.”

As part of the project, SFC developed the 3D model of El Escorial, which can now be used free of charge in any film, television and videogame production without the need for physical travel to the site.

“It is impressively forward-thinking,” surmised one of the judges, who felt this was an effective way to highlight Spain’s cultural heritage, while also positioning the territory as a leader in virtual location creation.
