UK filmmaker Simon Curtis will direct Gerron’s Last Film, starring Josh Gad, with the UK’s Rocket Science repping international sales.
The film is inspired by the true story of Kurt Gerron, one of the most famous Jewish actors and directors in pre-Nazi Germany. Unlike his friends Fritz Lang and Marlene Dietrich, Gerron refused to leave Germany and was ultimately sent to a Czech ghetto and concentration camp, Theresienstadt (Terezin) Ghetto. A camp commander then asks him to direct a propaganda film about Terezin.
It will shoot in the third quarter of 2026 in Germany and the Czech Republic, and is produced by Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Handelsman Keren of Pie Films, through the Israeli company’s newly launched UK office. Pie Films’ credits include Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Lost Daughter.
Ehud Lavski and Alon Gur Arye have written the script.
CAA Media Finance and WME Independent have domestic rights.
Curtis’ film credits include Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale, Woman In Gold and My Week With Marilyn. US actor Gad has starred in Murder On The Orient Express, is the voice of Olaf in Frozen 1 & 2 and recently wrapped on Spaceballs 2.
“This is a film that will be universally spoken about and responded to,” said Gad. “These themes are more relevant today than they have been in decades. I got into this industry to make movies that are important, that can create conversations, and I strongly know in my heart that this is one of those films.”
“I feel very passionately about telling Kurt Gerron’s remarkable story which offers so many exciting creative opportunities to a filmmaker,” added Curtis. “It demonstrates how vital the arts are in dark times and its themes are becoming more essential every day.”
“Kurt Gerron was a master of so many talents – he was a stage performer, singer, actor and director,” noted the producers. “He was larger than life, and the infinitely talented Josh Gad is the perfect person to embody this complex, nuanced role.”
