EXCLUSIVE: Studiocanal has secured international sales rights to the 4K restoration of Pan’s Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro’s dark fantasy that receives its 20th anniversary screening in Cannes Classics today [May 12].
Del Toro will attend Debussy Theatre for the presentation of the film, widely regarded as his masterpiece, two decades after the Cannes world premiere received a record 22-minute standing ovation.
Studiocanal VP editorialisation & development library Falko Jahn negotiated the deal with del Toro’s Necropia after the rights reverted to the filmmaker, and is lining up an autumn roll-out.
Pan’s Labyrinth will release in 4K theatrically in the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and Benelux this autumn with special presentations in 3D, followed by the roll-out of the premium UHD Collector’s Editions in UK, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.
Cineverse holds North American rights and Mexican exhibitor Cinépolis will lead theatrical distribution in Mexico and across Latin America.
The film won three Oscars for cinematography, art direction, and make-up and takes place in 1944 Francoist Spain, where the step-daughter of a sadistic captain gets assigned three tasks by a faun to prove she is the reincarnation of a princess.
Optimum Releasing, which Studiocanal acquired in 2006, distributed Pan’s Labyrinth in the UK in 2006 and del Toro’s The Devil’s Backbone in 2001.
Del Toro said, “The care and attention Studiocanal devotes to the support of legacy cinema, as experienced in theatres and physical media, is a gift to anyone who appreciates the art of film.”
“Bringing celebrated classics to cinemas all over the world is the cornerstone of our strategy,” Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh said, ”and we are proud to now collaborate with Guillermo on our theatrical re-release in Studiocanal markets later this year.”
