Time’s Up UK and US-based diversity and inclusion platform Black Beauty Roster have partnered on the All Textures Certification (ATC) and an accompanying leadership council, which features actors Lashana Lynch and Naomie Harris plus producer Barbara Broccoli, to help tackle on-set hair and make-up discrimination.
The council will oversee the certification and set a new professional standard for assessing hairstylists’ and makeup artists’ ability to work with all hair textures and all complexions. ATC is starting in the UK, with plans to be rolled out globally.
Further members of the council include ITV’s director of creative diversity Ade Rawcliffe, British Blacklist founder Akua Gyamfi, Time’s Up UK’s chair Heather Rabbatts, Amazon’s training and development consultant Donna Taberer, BBC’s head of creative diversity Jessica Schibli, DDA chief strategy officer Julie La’Bassiere, Black Beauty Roster founder Maude Okrah Hunter, agent Mildred Yuan, producer Nicola Gregory and Sky Studios’ director of productions Rebecca O’Connor.
It also includes actors Ann Ogbomo and Fola Evans-Akingbola and hair and beauty professionals Charlotte Mensah Kamanza Amihyia, Kevin Fortune, Liz Tagg, Millie Kendall, Naomi Donne and Sabrina Elba.
ATC is for aspiring and established hairdressers. Time’s Up UK and Black Beauty Roster plan to have 125 certified by December 2026, with an All Complexions Certification to follow.
“I’m so proud to see the progress being made for hair and makeup discrimination, enabling Black artists to collaborate in more trustworthy and collaborative environments,” said campaign ambassador Lynch. “The development of the BBR X Time’s Up UK All Textures and All Complexions Certification is a necessary one.”
“Representing textured hair in every pattern on screen is more than artistry – it’s legacy work,” added Sinners hair designer Shunika Terry, a supporter of the campaign. “After 29 years in the hair industry and more than two decades designing for film and television, I am honoured to authentically represent our textures in every frame. It is both my joy and responsibility to celebrate the beauty, versatility, and cultural significance of our hair.
“When actors who have historically been underrepresented sit in my chair, trust is everything. That trust is built on experience, foundation, and a deep understanding that our hair deserves to be seen, respected, and celebrated.”
