The Academy is heading to Tokyo International Film Festival for a special programme of events that will include a talk with AMPAS CEO Bill Kramer and a behind-the-scenes look at the Oscars.

The programme, titled Academy in Tokyo, will host a delegation of senior AMPAS executives at the festival in late October.

They include Kramer, Academy president Lynette Howell Taylor and chief membership, impact and industry officer Meredith Shea, who will take part in a panel discussion on October 28. The session will offer a behind-the-scenes looks at the Oscars as well as insights into the Academy’s global initiatives and membership programmes. The talk will also explore the Academy’s perspective on the current state and future of international cinema.

Kramer, on his first visit to Asia, is also set to receive the Global Cinema Leadership Special Award in recognition of his contributions to the development of the film industry and advancement of film culture. Since becoming Academy CEO in 2022, he has worked to further diversify and globalise the Academy’s membership.

A private reception for Academy members from around the world will take place after the panel and award presentation.

The following day, on October 29, Kramer will take part in a conversation with Hiro Matsuoka, president and CEO of Toho Co, the leading Japanese studio behind Oscar-winner Godzilla Minus One, which has acquired US distributor and producer GKids and UK-based distributor Anime Limited during his tenure.

The discussion is set to cover the global cinematic landscape, the future of theatrical and streaming distribution, and next steps for international collaboration.

The Academy will have further senior executives in attendance such as Amy Homma, director and president of the Academy Museum and Academy Collection; Jenny Galante, chief revenue and business development officer; and Jennifer Davidson, chief marketing, communications and content officer.

The 39th TIFF takes place from October 26 to November 4 while affiliated content market TIFFCOM runs October 28-30.
