Transilvania film festival unveils 2021 competition line-up

Transilvania International Film Festival (TIFF, July 23 – August 1) has revealed the 12 films that will screen in its official competition and its international jury.

Each title competing for the Transilvania Trophy will receive its Romanian premiere at the 20^th edition of the festival, which is set to take place in-person in the city of Cluj-Napoca.

They include What Do We See When We Look At The Sky?, by Georgian filmmaker Alexandre Koberidze, which played in competition at the Berlinale, and Lili Horvát’s Preparations To Be Together For An Unknown Period Of Time, which was Hungary’s Oscar submission.

Christos Nikou’s Apples, which was Greece’s Oscar submission, and P.S. Vinothraj’s Indian drama Pebbles, which won the top prize at this year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), will also screen in competition.

Philipp Yuryev’s Russian coming-of-age feature The Whaler Boy, first seen at Venice, and Sundance selection The Pink Cloud from Brazil’s Iuli Gerbase will also compete at TIFF.

Romanian films selected for the competition include Eugen Jebeleanu’s debut Poppy Field and Bogdan George Apetri’s thriller Unidentified.

The jury who will decide the winners includes Mexican writer and producer Guillermo Arriaga, known for his scripts Amores Perros and 21 Grams, and Oscar-nominated for Babel. His script for The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada won the best screenplay prize at Cannes in 2005.

Further jury members include Katriel Schory, executive director of Israel Film Fund and founder of Belfilms; US actor and filmmaker Scott Coffey; and Romanian actor Maria Popistașu, star of Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight title Întregalde. A fifth jury member is set to be announced shortly.

TIFF is set to open with Cesc Gay’s Spanish comedy The People Upstairs, as part of a new collaboration with San Sebastian International Film Festival.
