
UK-Ireland box office revenue was up 14% year-on-year in the first half of 2026, after a strong June saw takings up 29% on the equivalent month last year, according to Rentrak.
The year to date is at £604.9m, 14% up on the £532.2m at the same stage in 2025, and up 34% on the £451.6m at the same point in 2024.
Box office receipts for June grossed £99.4m, up 29% on the £76.8m in June 2025. Takings have been up in five of the six months of the year so far, as the theatrical sector shows recovery post-pandemic and post-strikes.

Toy Story 5 dominated the chart for June with £32.2m, almost double the £16.6m of How To Train Your Dragon, the highest-grossing title from June 2025.
The Disney-Pixar animation was tracking 6% ahead of Toy Story 4 at the end of June, and tracking behind only Toy Story 3 among animated titles.
Steven Spielberg’s Disclosure Day took second place for the month with £11.4m for Universal. It recorded the fifth-biggest opening ever for Spielberg with £3.8m, and is currently the director’s seventh-highest-grossing film of all time in the territory, soon to overtake 1975’s Jaws (£11.8m).
May horror releases Obsession and Backrooms both made it into the June top 10, in fourth and fifth place for Universal and A24, respectively. Obsession became the ninth-highest-grossing release of 2026 with £17.1m and is the fifth-highest-grossing horror of all time. Backrooms became A24’s highest-grossing title in the territory with £12.5m and is in the all-time horror top 10.
Superhero titles Masters Of The Universe and Supergirl both made the top 10 in sixth and eighth place, but both will likely not hit £6m across their cinema runs. All of the top 10 titles in June were US-originated films.
Universal led the month among distributors with three titles, followed by Disney with two, then one each for Paramount, A24, Sony, Warner Bros and Piece Of Magic.

Michael remained in the monthly top 10 for a third consecutive month, in seventh place with £3.8m. The Universal title is the highest-grossing film of the year to date with £52.9m, and the second-highest-grossing music biopic of all time in the territory behind Bohemian Rhapsody (£55.4m).
Three new titles entered the year-to-date top 10 this month: Toy Story 5 in fifth place, Obsession in ninth, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian And Grogu in 10th.
For cinemas looking to continue the positive first half of the year across the summer, Universal started Minions & Monsters on July 1, albeit with a moderate first weekend. Disney opens its live-action Moana on July 10, which will be followed by Christopher Nolan’s epic The Odyssey via Universal from July 17. The month closes with the latest Spider-Man tentpole, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, through Sony on July 31.
