Studiocanal’s Scottish drama I Swear and Disney’s AI action Tron: Area will battle it out as the new releases in UK and Ireland cinemas this weekend.
Kirk Jones’s I Swear opens in 653 locations. The film tells the true story of John Davidson who was diagnosed with Tourette’s syndrome in the 80s when the condition was not well known. It had its world premiere at Toronto in the Centrepiece programme. Peter Mullan, Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Robert Aramayo lead the cast.
As a director, Jones’s previous films include My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (2016 - £983,534 opening); What To Expect When You’re Expecting (2012 - £661,000) and his most successful title, Nanny McPhee (2010 - £2.6m).
Meanwhile, Joachim Rønning’s Tron: Ares launches in 608 venues. It is the third title in the Tron series and acts as a sequel to 2010’s Tron: Legacy which opened on £2m for a £10.4m cume across its run.
Jared Leto stars in Ares as an advanced program soldier who is brought into the physical world. Further cast includes Greta Lee, Jeff Bridges, Gillian Anderson, Evan Peters and Jodie Turner-Smith.
Dogs, cops and docs
Also out this weekend is horror Good Boy which hits 330 sites via Vertigo Releasing. Ben Leonberg’s film tells the story of a supernatural haunting from the perspective of the family dog.
In re-releases, Park Circus is screening Tim Burton’s 2005 animation Corpse Bride in 325 cinemas. Meanwhile, Anime Ltd has the 1997 Japanese anime Perfect Blue in 164 locations.
Curzon is opening romantic thriller Plainclothes in 51 locations. Russell Tovey and Tom Blyth star in the film which premiered in Sundance and follows an undercover policeman tasked with apprehending gay men in 90s New York.
Documentary Iron Ladies is being rolled out via Miracle Comms and Dazzler. It follows the women involved in the 1984/85 Miners’ Strike.
Bulldog Distribution is releasing music documentary Omar And Cedric: If This Ever Gets Weird about progressive band The Mars Volta.
Further releases include Sundance award-winning documentary The Perfect Neighbor via Netflix; Indian drama Raavi De Kande via Zee Studios; animation Night Of The Zoopocalypse via Kazoo Films; and Irish documentary A Want In Her via Break Out Pictures.
