The Writers Guild of America West (WGAW) board has cancelled the 2026 Writers Guild Awards Los Angeles ceremony, as the WGAW staff union’s strike continues.
The show was scheduled to take place on March 8 at the JW Marriott in Downtown Los Angeles, concurrently with the East coast chapter’s ceremony. The 2026 Writers Guild Awards New York ceremony, presented by the Writers Guild of America East is moving ahead with its ceremony at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan.
Non-supervisory staff of the WGAW, organised under the Pacific Northwest Staff Union (PNWSU), have been on strike since February 17. Bargaining staff have been picketing outside the WGAW headquarters in mid-town Los Angeles. All member events have been cancelled and the building has been closed to members and the public.
WGAW and WGAE work together on contracts, including the Minimum Basic Agreement that is up for renewal this year, however they are separate unions. The WGAE’s staff union is organised with United Steelworkers and is not on strike.
The Los Angeles ceremony was scheduled to honour James Cameron with the Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement, Don Reo with the Paddy Chayefsky Laurel Award for Television Writing Achievement, and Mstyslav Chernov with the Paul Selvin Award for 2,000 Meters To Andriivka.
“As a labour union, we would not ask our guests to cross a picket line to attend the awards show,” said WGAW president Michele Mulroney. “The WGAW staff union has the right to strike, and our exceptional nominees and honorees deserve an uncomplicated celebration of their achievements.”
All sponsorship and ticket sales for the cancelled ceremony are being refunded. WGAW will plan a celebration later in the year for 2026 honourees and nominees.
