Dimension Films chief Bob Weinstein has greenlit a sequel to Piranha 3D three days after the horror film opened in the top ten on $10.1m.

Piranha 3D earned strong reviews and centres on an attack of prehistoric killer fish on a holiday resort filled with teens on Spring Break. In ts first weekend in the UK the film ranked third on $2.3m.

“We are thrilled that audiences are not just loving Piranha 3D, but cheering for it,” Piranha3D producer Mark Canton said. “And it’s fantastic that so many critics are really getting the movie and recommending it. We can’t wait to get to work on the sequel.”

Alexandre Aja directed Piranha 3D and the cast includes Elisabeth Shue, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Kelly Brook, Eli Roth, Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd.

Producing the Mark Canton / IPW production in association with Aja/Levasseur Prods alongside Canton were Marc Toberoff, Aja and Gregory Levasseur.

Bob Weinstein, Harvey Weinstein, Alix Taylor, Louis G Friedman, J Todd Harris and Chako van Leeuwen served as executive producers. Peter Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg co-wrote the screenplay.
