Downfall director Oliver Hirschbiegel will direct Caught In Flight for Ecosse Films.

Naomi Watts is to play the role of Princess Diana in Oliver Hirschbiegel’s Caught In Flight.

Produced by Ecosse Films, the film is based on the screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys and follows Princess Diana during the last two years of her life, during which time she found true personal happiness and achieved success as an international campaigner and humanitarian.

Watts, who will next be seen starring in The Impossible opposite Ewan McGregor, described it as an “honour to be able to play this iconic role - Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.’

Director Hirschbiegel said he was “delighted to have such a truly exceptional actress who embodies the warmth, humanity and empathy of such a global icon as Princess Diana.’

Douglas Rae and Robert Bernstein’s Ecosse Films is also producing another royal themed film Girls Night Out starring Juno Temple and Alexandra Roach as the young Queen and Princess Margaret.
