Alicia Scherson’s international co-production is an adaptation of novelist and poet Roberto Bolano’s book Una Novelita Lumpen

Dutch actor Rutger Hauer has joined the cast of Chilean director Alicia Scherson’s The Future, the third feature after Play and Tourists, both of which fared well on the international festival circuit.

The film is an adaptation of late Latin American novelist and poet Roberto Bolano’s book Una Novelita Lumpen that focuses on two Chilean children whose parents were killed in a car crash in Rome, then fall into thievery and prostitution to get by.

Hauer has taken on the role of Maciste – the love interest of the female protagonist played by Manuela Martelli. His character is also a body builder and ex-1950s era actor who played in Rome-set Hollywood ‘sword and sandal’ productions. Italian actor Nicolas Vaporidis also stars.

The production kicked off in Cologne, Germany last month before heading to Rome, where it is currently shooting. It next heads to Santiago de Chile.

The picture is a four-nationality co production between Chile’s Jirafa, Germany’s Pandora Film, Italy’s Movimento Film and Spain’s Astronauta and has the support of Audiovisual Foment Fund of Chile, Ibermedia, Film Und Medienstiftung NRW, the EU’s Media Programme, Visions Sud Est, the Roma Lazio Film Commission – Capitol Regions for Cinema network.
