Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Spain have taken theatrical rights to Oscar winning Spanish director Fernando Trueba’s Spanish-UK animation feature Chico & Rita.

Trueba shares directing duties with renowned Barelona based designer and ar tist Javier Mariscal for this 1940s/50s set drama about a young Cuban musician called Chico and a singer named Rita who travel from Cuba to America where they get submerged in the jazz scene of New York.

Production duties for the film are shared between Spanish outfits Fernando Trueba productions and Estudio Mariscal and Magic Light Pictures in the UK.

Chico & Rita has already received favourable reviews in the UK where it was recently released through CinemaNX and picked up the Grand Prix at the Holland animation film festival earlier this month.

Disney Spain will show the film in local theatres in February.
