EXCLUSIVE: Haut et Court has picked up French rights to Ali Asgari’s A Bit Of Light ahead of the film’s world premiere in competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Paris-and Berlin-based Salaud Morisset is handling international sales.
Asgari’s sixth feature is set in contemporary Iran and follows a disillusioned doctor who loses faith in the future after being arrested and having his medical practice shut down. Determined to end his life, he spends one final day visiting his siblings and mother, but their compassion, care and companionship slowly reconcile him with reality.
A Bit Of Light was produced by Iran’s Seven Springs Pictures alongside Switzerland’s Sunny Independent Pictures, Italy’s Zoe Films, Canada’s Good Measure Productions and Turkey’s Haurvatat Film.
Asgari makes his debut in Venice’s competition strand after last year’s Divine Comedy which premiered in the festival’s Horizons section, where his 2017 feature Disappearance also played. The director’s other films include Berlin 2022 title Until Tomorrow, Cannes’ Un Certain Regard selection Terrestrial Verses in 2023, and Higher Than Acidic Clouds, which played at IDFA in 2024.
Producer Milad Khosravi of Seven Springs Pictures called A Bit Of Light an example of “cinema that confronts urgent realities, carries meaningful social and political context, and remains deeply human”.
Haut et Court co-founder and head of distribution Laurence Petit called the film “a profoundly moving work” with a “deeply committed narrative”. She added: “The resistance, doubts and humanity of its characters overwhelm us, while celebrating the strength of community.”
Production and distribution outfit Haut et Court’s recent releases include Vincent Munier’s nature documentary Whispers In The Woods, Dominik Moll’s Case 137 and Thierry Klifa’s The Richest Woman In The World.
