Independent Film Company and Sapan Studio have acquired North American rights to first-time filmmaker Leah Nelson’s hand-drawn animation Tangles, which gets its North American premiere in Centrepiece in Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) next month.
Nelson, Trev Renney and Sarah Leavitt adapted the screenplay from Leavitt’s graphic memoir, Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer’s, My Mother And Me.
The feature will get an awards push as Independent Film Company plans a qualifying run this year followed by wider theatrical expansion in early 2027.
Tangles premiered in Cannes Special Screenings and portrays a young illustrator on the cusp of success who along with her family must deal with their lively mother’s Alzheimer’s disease.
Abbi Jacobson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Beanie Feldstein, Seth Rogen and Samira Wiley lead the voice cast.
Vicky Patel, Steve Barnett and Alan Powell of Monarch Media produced alongside Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Madeline Blair of Point Grey Pictures; Ross Murray, Teresa Toews, Jay Grandin and Nelson through Giant Ant; Lauren Miller Rogen, Jen W. Ray and Sophie Hoegh through Lylas Pictures; and Louis-Dreyfus.
Ayo Kepher-Maat of Independent Film Company brokered the deal with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers.
Tangles screens in TIFF on September 13. The festival runs September 10-20.
